You can either cast or troll the X-Rap for extra versatility.  It&#8217;s nose forward bill allows it to quickly dive into position and really slash from side to side as you jerk.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Smithwick-Floating-Rattlin-Rogue-Fishing\/dp\/B001LQAY4O\/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1549929453&amp;sr=8-1&amp;keywords=rattlin+rogue&amp;linkCode=ll1&amp;tag=jdhute74-20&amp;linkId=64acb7423ce40f3a840abdb3aa64e14c&amp;language=en_US\">Smithwick Rattlin Rogue:<\/a>  This is one of the original suspending jerkbaits with a cult-like following.  Go with the larger 5 1\/2 inch model that allows for longer casts.  The rattle really helps when fishing murky\/muddy water.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Rapala-Husky-Fishing-Size-3-125\/dp\/B001NXCXXK\/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1549929602&amp;sr=8-1&amp;keywords=husky+jerk&amp;linkCode=ll1&amp;tag=jdhute74-20&amp;linkId=c78829d18193f39f8962b93eda339dff&amp;language=en_US\">Rapala Husky Jerk: <\/a> A classic design that works well in shallow applications(4-6 feet of water).  It suspends well and works perfectly during the spawn.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2>Jerkbait Fishing Tips<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Jerkbaits aren\u2019t just for pre-spawn cold water fishing. &nbsp;They\u2019re deadly effective all year round.  Doesn\u2019t matter what kind of mood bass are in, if you know how to efficiantly cover water you\u2019ll get a ton of bites.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4>Find The Right Pause<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Figuring out the right fishing cadence will make or break your day. &nbsp;In general terms your cadence is the rhythm you choose to fish on any given day. &nbsp;Basically it all comes down to the way your lures designed and the manner in which you fish it.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When fishing a jerkbait it\u2019s all about those rips, twitches and cranks between each and every pause. &nbsp;Remember that your trying to mimic baitfish so try to find something natural.  Do baitfish always swim in a straight line or do wounded fish swim erratically? <br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> Shad casually foraging around weeds will look different than one evading predators. &nbsp;Match what\u2019s naturally occuring in the wild.  When bass are actively feeding, fast erratic movements work best. &nbsp;On those slow fishing days you\u2019ll want to throw in a long lingering pause.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5>How Long Should Your Pause Be?<br><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Fishing a jerkbait in cold water is going to take a lot of patience. &nbsp;We often forget that we need to match our presentation to the bass\u2019 mood. &nbsp;In colder water where bass are lazy\/lethargic you need long drawn out pauses. &nbsp;On warmer days your pause can be short and aggressive.  <br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since fish are cold blooded their metabolism is going to slow down when the temperature drops. &nbsp;Forcing yourself to slow down is the only way to catch cold water bass.  I always use a counting method when figuring out my pause. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Figure out how long it takes until you get your first bite and repeat the process a little bit slower. &nbsp;Before long you should know exactly what\u2019s working and what\u2019s not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4>Understand the Water Temperature<br><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/rangetoreel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Jerkbait-Fishing-Water-Temperature-1024x576.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6431\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rangetoreel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Jerkbait-Fishing-Water-Temperature-1024x576.png 1024w, https:\/\/rangetoreel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Jerkbait-Fishing-Water-Temperature-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/rangetoreel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Jerkbait-Fishing-Water-Temperature-768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/rangetoreel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Jerkbait-Fishing-Water-Temperature-100x56.png 100w, https:\/\/rangetoreel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Jerkbait-Fishing-Water-Temperature-834x469.png 834w, https:\/\/rangetoreel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Jerkbait-Fishing-Water-Temperature.png 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Before settling on any one single technique it\u2019s nice to know the water temperature. &nbsp;When the temperature dips down low you\u2019ll have to slow everything down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>55+ Degrees:<\/strong> &nbsp;When the water temperature is above 55 degrees they are going to be fairly active. &nbsp;Depending on the season they\u2019ll either be going into their spring or fall transition. &nbsp;This is when bass <g class=\"gr_ gr_11 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_disable_anim_appear Grammar multiReplace\" id=\"11\" data-gr-id=\"11\">are<\/g> going to be actively feeding so fast presentations are best.<\/li><li><strong>50 Degrees:<\/strong> &nbsp;Most fish are going to be fairly active and willing to bite <g class=\"gr_ gr_12 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_disable_anim_appear ContextualSpelling multiReplace\" id=\"12\" data-gr-id=\"12\">faster moving<\/g> prey. &nbsp;A solid 3-5 count should bring in the most bites.  Start with a shorter pause and increase if you\u2019re not getting any bites.<\/li><li><strong>45-50 Degrees: <\/strong>&nbsp;Once the temps drop into the 40\u2019s everything starts to slow down. &nbsp;Some of the bigger bass that retain body heat will still actively feed, but you\u2019ll want to extend your pause. &nbsp;Go with a minimum of 5 seconds and work your way up to 10 second pauses. Avoid the urge to speed up your retrieve, because these are the days when jerkbaits really shine.<\/li><li><strong>45 and Below:<\/strong> &nbsp;Now we\u2019re approaching cold water territory where you really have to wait. &nbsp;Focus on long 10+ second pauses between jerks.  Going any longer than 15 seconds will quickly drive you crazy. &nbsp;At that point you\u2019ll want to try out another lure.<\/li><li><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4>Fall on a Slack Line<br><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Jerkbait action is entirely dependent on the way you move your rod tip. &nbsp;They aren\u2019t designed like crankbaits and other lures.  To improve your action introduce a little bit of slack in your line. &nbsp;Only use your reel to reel in the excess slack limiting your movement.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That little bit of slack is what really sends your jerkbait on those erratic jumps. &nbsp;Allow the bait to glide naturally and fully settle as you pause.  Before you make that next jerk drop the tip of your rod creating a little more jerk. &nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jerking on a tight line really limits the way your lure is going to move. It\u2019s that crazy action that really draws in all those strikes. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4>Fish Those Deep Water Drop-Offs<br><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>When the water starts to get cold bass tend to head for those steep drop-offs. &nbsp;As the surface water starts to cool they head towards deep water, but they still like easy access to the shallows. &nbsp;Vertical drops allow them to quickly head towards the shallows to feed without wasting extra energy on the transition.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I always look for large vertical drops right near the edge of spring bedding areas. &nbsp;Just keep an eye out fro shallow water bait in the colder months.  When there\u2019s bait you\u2019ll always find bass nearby.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4>Choosing Your Lure Color<br><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Don\u2019t get all caught up when choosing the right lure color. &nbsp;Focus on keeping things simple using a few basic color patterns. &nbsp;If you match the forage species you\u2019ll always get bites.  Everything else is just a matter of personal preference.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Take a look at the sky so you can get an idea of the underwater visibility. &nbsp;On bright and sunny days you\u2019ll want metallic and clear lures so you don\u2019t stand out. &nbsp;When it\u2019s cloudy and overcast dull colors are going to offer a much better presentation. &nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4>Try Fishing Nearby Cover<br><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>You don\u2019t want to completely avoid underwater cover. &nbsp;On those cold winter days bass head for anything that will give them a little more heat. &nbsp;Since wood retains heat throughout the day those are natural targets.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They head towards nearby docks, laydowns and brush piles looking for that 1-2 degree heat advantage over their prey. &nbsp;While you\u2019ll probably get snagged working directly over brush you can always work parallel to it.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>Don\u2019t be afraid to cast towards visible cover trying to draw out fish. &nbsp;It\u2019ll probably take a little practice, but once you regularly get close you\u2019re sure to catch a few monsters.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4>Chase The Wind<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>I can\u2019t count the number of time I\u2019ve been told to chase the wind when jerkbait fishing. &nbsp;Honestly it\u2019s hard to say why windy days are so great.  Probably has something to do with surface visibility. &nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Those ripples and waves break up the sunlight making your lure just a little less visible. &nbsp;In clear water lakes that slight change in visibility might just be enough to lure in that wairy bass.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4>Don\u2019t Fish Extremely Dirty Water<br><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Just remember that jerkbait fishing is all about visibility. &nbsp;There\u2019s not going to be any vibration to attract a strike and less water displacement so they need to be able to see your lure. &nbsp;All jerkbaits have going for them is their natural movement.  <br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You need at least 1.5-2 feet of visibility to effectively work a jerkbait. &nbsp;Any less than that and you\u2019re better off working a lure with more water displacement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4>Keep an Eye Out For Dying Shad<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Late in the year you should start to see schools of dead shad floating on the water. &nbsp;This is the perfect time to bring out your jerkbaits.  Since you\u2019re trying to mimic the twitch of a dying shad anyway you can\u2019t go wrong. &nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Go with a slow drawn out cadence of 3-4 jerks followed by a long drawn out pause. Considering the water temperature is close to 40 degrees you want a long 10+ second pause. &nbsp;Most of the time you\u2019ll get a strike a few seconds after the pause.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4>Fishing Different Seasons<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/rangetoreel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Jerkbait-Different-Seasons-1024x576.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6432\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rangetoreel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Jerkbait-Different-Seasons-1024x576.png 1024w, https:\/\/rangetoreel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Jerkbait-Different-Seasons-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/rangetoreel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Jerkbait-Different-Seasons-768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/rangetoreel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Jerkbait-Different-Seasons-100x56.png 100w, https:\/\/rangetoreel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Jerkbait-Different-Seasons-834x469.png 834w, https:\/\/rangetoreel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Jerkbait-Different-Seasons.png 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The bad news is you can&#8217;t use the same technique all year long.  However, you can fish a jerkbait throughout all 4 seasons.  You just need to make a few changes to your approach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5>Spring<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Spring is by far my favorite time to fish a jerkbait, but you need a different technique between the pre-spawn,spawn and post-spawn periods. Temperatures quickly change throughout the spring so you\u2019ll have to adapt fast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Prespawn:<\/strong>  During the pre-spawn <g class=\"gr_ gr_6 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling ins-del multiReplace\" id=\"6\" data-gr-id=\"6\">phasse<\/g> focus on deep water locations. While fishing cold water you&#8217;ll use the same basic techniques that you use throughout winter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The water temperature is still cold so fish hold in deep water close to their shallow spawning beds. &nbsp;Try to key on those staging areas between winter and spawn locations.  Look for those areas that offer quick transitions from deep to shallow water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Spawn:  <\/strong>When the water reaches that magic 60 degree mark bass head towards the spawning areas.  They swarm to the shallow water flats, creeks and bays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the spawn focus on suspending and floating jerkbaits.  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Rapala-X-Rap-Jerkbait-Fishing-Silver\/dp\/B001NXCYMK\/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1549928390&amp;sr=8-2-fkmr0&amp;keywords=rapala+floating+jerkbait&amp;linkCode=ll1&amp;tag=jdhute74-20&amp;linkId=c36a489be0ad8b32deaf98e06c5d98ef&amp;language=en_US\">Rapala&#8217;s X-Rap Jerkbait<\/a> really cleans up in 3-8 feet of water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Post-Spawn:  Post spawn bass are going to hang around the shallows for a while before heading off to deeper water.  They&#8217;ll be looking for an easy meal so longer pauses work well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During this phase go with a slow floating jerkbait like the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Rapala-SDRS09-Shadow-3-5-Inch-Silver\/dp\/B01CPLRBDA\/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1549928614&amp;sr=8-1&amp;keywords=Rapala+Shadow+Rap+Shad&amp;linkCode=ll1&amp;tag=jdhute74-20&amp;linkId=40d991b956ee8e9fefdf6a04b913eb3a&amp;language=en_US\">Rapala Shadow Rap Shad<\/a>. It&#8217;s a slow-riser on the pause perfect for 3-4 feet of water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5>Summer<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Most people don&#8217;t like fishing <g class=\"gr_ gr_4 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling ins-del multiReplace\" id=\"4\" data-gr-id=\"4\">jerkbaits<\/g> during the summer months.  I&#8217;ll still use <g class=\"gr_ gr_5 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling ins-del multiReplace\" id=\"5\" data-gr-id=\"5\">jerkbaits<\/g>, but only on those rare occasions when nothing else seems to work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the summer you have to go deep or around cover which normally means out of effective jerkbait range.  Your best bet is to fish flats in the early mornings and late evenings when bass are actively feeding. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> This is the only times they&#8217;ll go shallow enough to effectively work a <g class=\"gr_ gr_3 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling\" id=\"3\" data-gr-id=\"3\">jerkbait<\/g>.  You&#8217;d probably be better off working a faster moving lure like a <g class=\"gr_ gr_97 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling ins-del multiReplace\" id=\"97\" data-gr-id=\"97\">squarebill<\/g> crankbait.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5>Fall<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Bring out your jerkbaits after the first two cold fronts come along towards the end of summer.  Bass start heading into their fall patterns which means they&#8217;re actively feeding for winter.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They start thinking &#8220;Bait,Bait,Bait,Bait,Bait&#8221;.  As long as you match the forage you should have success during the fall.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Look for those big balls of shad on your fish finder and work a floating or suspending models nearby.  Target the backs of creeks nearby windy banks where bait naturally schools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5><g class=\"gr_ gr_24 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling ins-del multiReplace\" id=\"24\" data-gr-id=\"24\">Winte<g class=\"gr_ gr_26 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Style replaceWithoutSep\" id=\"26\" data-gr-id=\"26\">r<\/g><\/g><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>You can even fish a <g class=\"gr_ gr_6 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling\" id=\"6\" data-gr-id=\"6\"><g class=\"gr_ gr_6 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling\" id=\"6\" data-gr-id=\"6\">jerkbait<\/g><\/g> during the cold winter period if you know where to look. &nbsp;Fish are going to be much less active staying near deeper water. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> Focus on large dropoffs that offer quick access to shallow water. &nbsp;Switch between sinking, suspending and suspending spoonbill models so you can work down 10-15 feet.<br><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Twitch-Twitch-Pause, Twitch-Twitch-Pause, does that sound all too familiar. &nbsp;Every jerkbait fisherman will inevitably develop their own cadence.
